Mountain bike racing team for teens starts up
Local business owners Andrew Cavaletto of Scotts Valley Cyclesport and Steve Simonovich of Santa Cruz Pasta Factory have announced the formation of a competitive cross country mountain bike racing team.
The team is open to all high school-age students in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley.
Since 2001, competitive high school mountain bike racing has grown to include leagues throughout the western United States. The Scotts Valley-San Lorenzo Valley team will compete in the Nor Cal High School Cycling league with 40 other teams and more than 600 athletes.
Training starts informally in the fall, with official practices starting in November. The racing season comprises five races starting in February.
An informational meeting is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Scotts Valley Branch Library’s Fireside Room, 251 Kings Village Road, in Scotts Valley.
Softball tourney a success
The 15th annual Jim Walters softball tournament went off without a hitch Aug. 7 and 8 at Highlands Park in Ben Lomond.
Travis’s All-Stars won the men’s division and The Crystals won the co-ed championship after two days of play. Sixteen teams competed, eight in each division.
Scotts Valley High School Athletic Director Louie Walters runs the tournament in memory of his father, Jim Walters, who ran recreation programs in the county for 25 years.
Gymnasts shine
Locals from The Vargas Academy in Scotts Valley took home 24 ribbons and two medals from the USA Gymnastic Trampoline & Tumbling National Championships last week in San Antonio, Texas.
Eight athletes from the local gym competed in all three events: double mini-trampoline, trampoline and power tumbling.
Team members were Bryanna Wagner, Grant Simmons, Pailin Demeo, Wyatt Stoker, Jared Farst, Sam English, Alec Scott and Buddy Takemoto.
