Equestrian center rides well
Five members of Scotts Valley’s Glenwood Equestrian Center qualified for the Seven Oaks Dressage Championship.
Mei Curry and Shino Beck qualified to enter as teenagers in the championship in Portola Valley on Sunday, Oct. 23. Adult riders Dorothy Wise, Dee White, Marilyn Cantey and Shelly Reynolds also qualified to enter the championship.
SV edges Watsonville in polo
Scotts Valley girls beat Watsonville at Watsonville High on Oct. 7 in a close match winning 4-3 over the Wildcatz.
Aria Leonard led the scoring for the Falcons with three goals followed by Meredith Barton who added one. Kelsey Van Valer added four steals and Barton had three.
Scotts Valley’s Hannah Freeman played well in the goal with 11 saves.
The Falcons, 5-6, play next at Notre Dame in Salinas at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 25.
SLV tops Salinas polo
Haley Smith led the charge with three goals for the Cougars as they defeated host Salinas High 11-6 on Oct. 5. Marisa Petras had two goals and seven steals while teammates Sarah Sargeant and Cameron Kellogg each added two scores. Goalkeeper Taylor Friend had three saves. In the victory, as the defending SCCAL champion, the Cougars move to 16-2 in the Mountain Division of the Tri County Athletic League.
Locals shine at invite
Aptos girls distance phenom Nikki Hiltz won the 2.96-mile course in 17 minutes, 4 seconds and SLV’s Anna Maxwell took second in 17:24 and Scotts Valley’s Vanessa Fraser finished in fourth in 17:47 at the Crystal Springs Invitational Cross Country meet on Oct. 8.
The SLV girls team won the event with 87 points. Scotts Valley took 8th with 310 points.
The Cougars starting five varsity runners finished in the top 35. Maxwell was followed by Claire MacMillan (19th, 19:14), Jessica Germany (26th, 19:31), Jessica Jensen (31st, 19:41) and Abby Sherman (33rd, 19:48).
Maulers need new home
The Boulder Creek-based roller derby girls team The Mountain Maulers are in desperate need of an indoor “home” practice space before the rains arrive.
The women’s team is now 27 skaters strong and have new skaters starting weekly. The team practices at the Boulder Creek Elementary School tennis courts, which they say, work for now, but as it gets dark earlier, and the courts are wet for weeks at a time the team will not have a place to practice.
