Sophomore earns repeat spot in national race
With a 10th-place finish in a race this past weekend, San Lorenzo Valley High School sophomore Anna Maxwell earned a second trip to the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego.
Maxwell finished the regional qualifying race in 18 minutes, 38 seconds on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.
Last year, Maxwell placed eighth in the national race.
The upcoming field of 40 runners is filled with the top runners from Alaska, Hawaii, California, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Montana. Maxwell will be joined in San Diego by fellow Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League runner Nikki Hiltz from Aptos High, who placed sixth in the qualifying race. The national race is Saturday, Dec. 10.
Other SLV runners at Mount San Antonio included Nick Hicks, a senior, who placed 114th in 17:14 in the boys seeded race; Landis MacMillan, 164th, 17:44; and Branden Caldwell, 203rd, 19:25.
Jacob Hicks, a sophomore, took 27th place in the boys Frosh-Soph All-West Region race in 17:48. Teammate Matt Abernathy finished in 18:15.
Felton’s Claire MacMillan was fourth in the girls Frosh-Soph All-West Region race in 19:43, and Abby Sherman of Ben Lomond took 27th in 20:55. Both are sophomores at San Lorenzo Valley High. Freshman Jessica Germany took 14th (20:55) in the girls frosh-soph race.
Falcon wrestlers take eighth at Peninsula Invitational
Scotts Valley High wrestler Kevin Edington, competing at 106 pounds, won his first three matches over the weekend before losing in the finals, but he took home second place at the Peninsula Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Half Moon Bay.
The tournament was Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3.
Jake Revino (113 pounds) won one of his three matches for fourth place. Grant Margerum (126 pounds) won four of his five matches and earned third place. Abi Lopez (120 pounds) was 0-2. Anthony Smith (135 pounds) won one match. Andy Ramirez (152 pounds) won one of his three matches. Baldan Dashiev (170 pounds) won two of his matches for fourth place.
The team placed eighth among 27 schools.
Little League registration continues
The next in-person registration period for SLV Little League will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Redwood Pizzeria, 6205 Highway 9, in Felton. Those registering in person will need medical information, and those new to the league should take a copy of each player’s birth certificate.
