Lacrosse team suffers first loss
The Scotts Valley lacrosse team finally found mortality. The team’s chief rival, the Aptos Mariners, wore the Falcons down and bested the previously undefeated Falcons 8-7 at on March 23 at Aptos High.
Collin Corbella led the Falcons with four goals as the Mariner defense shut down Scotts Valley scoring leaders Wesley Koenig and Spencer Foglequist, holding them to a single goal each.
The game was a see-saw battle as the Falcons tied the game up four times before falling behind in the final three minutes for the loss.
Distance runners run top times
Aptos High School’s Nikki Hiltz ran the fastest mile in the nation this season, followed closely by Cougar sophomore Anna Maxwell, who ran the third fastest time in the county in a dual meet between the two schools on March 22.
Hiltz edged Maxwell by just over a second and finished the race in 4 minutes, 49.21 seconds. Maxwell finished in 4:50.65.
Maxwell would get her revenge in the 800 meters later that day, beating Hiltz and taking home a fifth-best national time of 2:12.93.
SLV thrower Cameron Kellogg won both throwing events for the Cougars. She threw discus 94-6, and the shot put 30-9.
For the boys, Lucas Sinnott won the long jump (18-7), and the 100-meter dash (11.73).
At the Westmont/West Valley relay meet on March 24, Cougar junior Cody Johnson posted the best time in the Central Coast Section in the 800 meters finishing in 1:56.52.
Scotts Valley runners excel
Scotts Valley freshman Hayley Herberg won the 200 meters in 27.68 and the 400 meters in 1:02.92 in a five team dual meet at Santa Cruz High on March 22. Teammate Vanessa Fraser won the 800 meters in 2:19.65 and helped the winning Falcon 4×400 relay team to a time of 4:20.84.
SLV baseball wins again
Red hot San Lorenzo Valley High School (6-1 overall, 2-0 SCCAL) toppled Santa Cruz High 6-5 on March 23. Sophomore Cougar pitcher Jordan Peabody earned the win and Lucas Trader batted in three runs and scored twice for the Cougars.
SV all-star helps north county
Scotts Valley High School’s Natalia Ebrahimian led the North with 23 points and helped lead her squad to a 85-46 victory over players from South county in the 5th Annual Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club North-South All-Star Basketball Classic on Friday, March 23.
SLV swimmers win
San Lorenzo Valley High School topped St. Francis CC 115-28 in a league dual meet on March 23 held at SLV. The Cougars were led by Hayley Smith and Marisa Petras who both won two events. Smith won the 200 meter individual medley (2:38.81) and the 50 meter freestyle (28.97). Petras took home first in the 500 meter free (6:45.7), and the 100 meter backstroke (1:14.25).
Falcons crush Saratoga
Scotts Valley High School (4-4) evened up their record by crushing host Saratoga High 10-2 in a make up non-league game on March 26. Pitcher Seryna Tapuloa picked up the win, while smashing two triples among her three hits and scoring twice. The Falcons were boosted by Sigrid Holtrops 2-run homer and Haley Robinson who swatted two hits, drove in two runs, walked twice and scored three runs.
