Football
In last Saturday’s 10th Annual Lions Senior Bowl, San LorenzoValley, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Harbor, and Soquel high schools, called the “North;” and Aptos, Monte Vista Christian, Pajaro Valley, Watsonville, St. Francis high schools, called the “South,” met at Soquel High School.
They were coached, respectively, by Scotts Valley High’s Louie Walters and Adam Hazel of St. Francis. While the North came in full strength (37 players), the South came in with only 16 players. That sad discrepancy was reflected in the 42-0 win for the North.
Our readership area schools’ players did fine. In an all-Scotts Valley score, Dawson Danner threw a 1st qtr TD pass to Tim Wagner, then SLV’s Nick Salibi threw a TD pass to SV’s Tanner Spence to make it 21-0 and they duplicated that feat later in the 3rd qtr to make it 35-0.
Boys’ basketball
At 8-3, San LorenzoValley is in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic league’s second place, behind unbeaten Santa Cruz, which seems to have one of the best teams in the school’s history.
The Cougars’ home game tonight vs. close-behind Aptos could solidify SLV’s position.
ScottsValley is 3-7 in the SCCAL.
Of individual players, Sebastian Vroman-Neill has 13.7, the league’s 4th highest points-per-game average, while Davon Northcutt leads the league in assists and rebounds per game (5.0 and 11.9, respectively).
ScottsValley’s Tanner Spence leads the league in blocks per game – 2.0 – compared to the national average of 0.3.
Girls’ basketball
ScottsValley is 11-0 in league play, with the SCCAL title already clinched regardless of the one remaining game’s score. San Lorenz Valley is 3-8 in the league.
ScottsValley girls dominate the league stats, with Nikiya Bechtle topping points, assists and steals per game, Sam Boyle is 1st in rebounds per game, and she and Grace Giguiere are 3rd and 4th in points per game.
Girls’ soccer
With 3 league games remaining, ScottsValley still has a chance for a league title. They need to beat the 1st place Lady Mariners in Aptos, and also win their other 2 games – vs. Harbor and Soquel – and have Aptos lose another game. But they are already in the Central Coast Sections playoff, where anything can happen.
San Lorenzo Valley Lady Cougars are 1-7, having lost 3 league games by one goal.
Wrestling
Admittedly, it was a rebuilding year for ScottsValley, while San LorenzoValley had 4 high-achieving wrestlers. Cougars’ head coach Ken Pollastrini said: “We have small numbers, as usual, but good wrestlers. Four are ranked in the top 12 of Central Coast Section rankings: Jed Kraft (140 lb) at #1, Jesse Berry (154 lb) at #7, Jeremiah Aquirre (115 lb) #8 and his brother, Dominic Aquirre (134 lb) at #12.”
