Valley football camp takes place
More than 40 players’ ages 8 to 14 experienced live action football practice put on by coaches and varsity players from San Lorenzo Valley High School’s football program this week. The three-day camp, July 11-13 is aimed to improve their football form and knowledge.
Coaches and returning San Lorenzo Valley High seniors guided campers through dozens of tackling, ball handling, receiving, throwing, and blocking drills along with seven-on-seven practices.
The camp was founded by Mark Mercer and Billy Beltz in 1998. Mercer still helps with the camp, that is now run by Stephen Johnson. Johnson was a member of “The Fishburns” a T-ball team that was coached by Maze along with Mercer and Beltz in the late 1990s. Maze was killed in a drunk-driving accident.
Hole in one
Matt Nelson, 22, of Los Gatos hit a hole-in-one on the ninth hole of Valley Gardens Golf Course on Tuesday, July 5. Nelson used his pitching wedge to sink the 116-yard shot that was witnessed by Sergeant Major James Geannetti. Nelson began playing golf this summer and called the shot “beginners luck”.
Trouble softball wins Tahoe tourney
The Scotts Valley-based Trouble 16-and-under ‘A’ softball team finished with a 5-0 record at the ASA JO Tournament in Lake Tahoe last weekend.
From July 8-10, the Trouble beat up on the local Tahoe area teams in pool play and won a barnburner of a championship game 5-4 against the Carson Sharks.
Kellie Linkletter knocked in Hyllery Hershberger with a walk off double for the winning run in the bottom of the final inning. Shannon Egan was the winning pitcher of all three pool games and Danica Houseman pitched both Sunday games. With excellent defense, the team won both games on Sunday.
Trouble consists of May Avila, Shannon Egan, Angie and Hyllery Hershberger, Danica Houseman, Hayle Leontieff, Mariah Lindberg, Kellie Linkletter, Rita McCreesh, Jordan Rogers, Valerie Silva, Karlee Suba, Leah Viele and Nicole Whitney.
Coaches are Scott Lindberg, Doyal Hershberger, Dave Rogers and Matt Houseman. The team will play in the Surf City Showcase in Huntington Beach July 14-18 and at Nationals in Kent, Wash. beginning August 1.
Mountain Dream wins local tourney
The San Lorenzo Valley-based Mountain Dream 14-and-under softball team went 6-0 in the Blast by the Bay tournament at Soquel High July 8-10. The team cruised through the event undefeated to their second tournament win of the season and has yet to finish below third place in a competition. The team plays next at the Wess Jones tournament in San Jose this weekend.
