Local girl wins vaulting championship
Ben Lomond’s Emily Hogye took first place at the regional horse vaulting competition in Grass Valley over the weekend.
Hogye, 15, is a member of the Brookside Vaulters of Ben Lomond. She took first place overall after a flawless freestyle routine July 20 through 24.
She will head to the national competition in Denver in August.
In addition to competing, Hogye coaches the younger Brookside girls — several of whom earned ribbons at the weekend’s competition — under the guidance of her mother, Mona Hogye.
Nine-year-olds Simone Sutton and Ruby Monroe and sisters Robyn and Rachel Davies, 10 and 8, took home first- and second-place ribbons in several events at the regional competition. They are all students at San Lorenzo Elementary School, except Monroe, who is home-schooled.
Sutton, Monroe and Emily Rose, a 17-year-old who attends SLV High School, also claimed first-place honors for their triple routine on the barrel.
Vaulting consists of gymnastic routines on the back of a moving horse trained specifically for the sport.
