SLV cheer squad takes first
The San Lorenzo Valley High School Cheer squad recently took first place in the Varsity Co-ed Show cheer division at The JAMZ Adrenaline Heaven at University of California, Davis.
The competition Sunday, Jan. 13, was the first for the full cheer squad.
The squad is coached by Kacia Hudson and Brenda Szakacs, longtime cheer coaches who are working at the high school level for the first time.
 
Gymnast returns from Florida
Justine Goeury, a 12-year-old Scotts Valley gymnast, finished first on uneven bars and second overall to help a team of six gymnasts from Northern California win the National Judges Cup Level 7 meet Jan. 4 to 6 in Daytona, Fla.
In addition to winning on bars, Goeury, who competed in the senior division, finished second in the floor exercise, third on balance beam and 10th on vault for final score of 37.975.
More than 20 teams competed in the event, which featured gymnasts who qualified during a state qualifier late in 2012.

Falcons fall to powerful Cardinals
The Scotts Valley High girls soccer team lost 2-1 to rival Santa Cruz High on Jan. 10 at home.
Santa Cruz scored in the first half, but the Falcons tied the game at 1 when junior Melinda Lane took a ricocheted corner kick from freshman Mary Lonhart and scored from point-blank range in the 57th minute. Santa Cruz scored the game-winner off a corner kick shortly after.
The Cardinals improved to 4-0 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play, while the Falcons fell to 1-1-1.
Scotts Valley plays at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at St. Francis High in Watsonville.
 
Cougar boys defeat Falcons
Led by 11 points from Trever Patterson, the San Lorenzo Valley High Cougars boys basketball team defeated Scotts Valley High 47-23 on Monday, Jan. 14.
Billy Mullins had seven steals for the Cougars, who had 11 players score in the blowout.
SLV improved to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play, while Scotts Valley dropped to 0-15 overall after five league games.
 
Warriors fall to Skyforce
The Santa Cruz Warriors basketball team dropped to 11-7 on the season with a 99-83 loss to the Sioux Falls Skyforce in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Monday, Jan. 14.
The team was led by guard Maurice Baker, who scored 20 points and made three assists, and Chris Johnson, who contributed eight points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors’ next home game is at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Kaiser Permanente Arena, 140 Front Street in Santa Cruz.
