Volleyball teams take tourneys
Both ValleyStyle club volleyball teams, comprising girls from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley, won tournaments last weekend.
The 14-and-under team defeated five Bay Area teams and played a total of 10 games. The team beat the Eclipse from Sunnyvale for the final win Saturday, Jan. 26.
The 16-and-under team went undefeated, beating Palo Alto for the championship, on Sunday, Jan. 27.
The club has 12 Scotts Valley players and 13 SLV girls. Both teams are coached by Zoe Beltz and assistant coaches Maggie Witzig and Xavier Chavez.
SV girls win tournament
The six-member Scotts Valley girls wrestling team dominated the mat Saturday to win the fourth annual Baler’s Bash in Hollister.
Team captain Shelby Baker (122 pounds) and sophomore Domino Parrish (114 pounds) both took first.
Katherine Rositter (146 pounds) finished second; Alicia Pitts (108 pounds) and Addy Johnson (103 pounds) finished third; and Abigael Lopez (126 pounds) finished fourth. 
Each of the girls contributed to the overall total score of 99 team points to defeat second-place Alisal High School (95 points).
Wrestling for the Scotts Valley boys junior varsity team, Mitch Humphreys (170 pounds) finished fourth.
The girls team will compete at the Central Coast Section finals Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2, at Oak Grove High School in San Jose.
Local man takes second in martial arts
Felton’s Ashoka McCormick took second place at the Abu Dhabi Pro Cup Trials jujitsu competition in San Diego on Saturday and Sunday.
McCormick, who competed in the adult male purple belt ultra heavy division, took home a silver medal.
