Scotts Valley soccer team falls in playoff game
The Scotts Valley High girls soccer team was defeated 1-0 by Kings Academy in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
The back-and-forth game was up for grabs until midway through the second half when Falcon’s goalkeeper Emily Johnson blocked a shot and a Kings Academy player poked in the rebound. The Falcons were unable to respond, despite playing on its own turf.
Scotts Valley went into the game as the fourth seed in the tournament with a 9-6-5 record. Their opponents from Kings Academy were seeded 13th with a 7-6-5 record.
SV football player wins $1K as scholar-athlete
Scotts Valley High senior Ari Wargon was chosen to be one of two Santa Cruz County athletes representing the county at the 53rd National Football Foundation awards dinner, which took place after press time Thursday, Feb. 21.
The event at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel in Burlingame honored scholar-athletes from 12 counties in northern California.
Wargon, a running back, and Monte Vista Christian High player Connor Parker will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Wargon has a 3.89 high school GPA and plans to major in biology at University of California, Davis.
Several other athletes were honored locally. Tyler Bach from Scotts Valley High and Derek Poetzinger and Robbie Biagiotti from San Lorenzo Valley High each received a $200 scholarship from the Lions Club of Santa Cruz County as three of 18 National Football Foundation scholar-athletes of Santa Cruz County.
Girls head to state championship
The Central Coast Section-champion Scotts Valley High School girls wrestling team is headed to the California Interscholastic Federation state championship on Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23.
In 2012, 314 female wrestlers competed in the two-day tournament at Lemoore High School in Lemoore.
Shelby Baker, Abby Lopez-Gay, Alicia Pitts and Dominique Parrish are all on the tournament bracket and set to compete.

Santa Cruz Warrior is All-Star MVP
Santa Cruz Warriors guard Travis Leslie was named the MVP of the NBA D-League All-Star game in Houston on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Leslie scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds and led the Prospects team to a 139-125 victory over the Futures team.
He had been named a replacement player to the team two days before the game.
