Scotts Valley tennis drops Cougars
The Scotts Valley High School boys tennis team defeated San Lorenzo Valley High 6-0 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play Tuesday, April 16.
Ian Howard led the way with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marty Varner in the No. 1 singles slot, and Ryan Miller, playing at No. 2, defeated Casey Bailey.
The teams are preparing for the SCCAL finals, scheduled for April 23 and 24 at Seascape Resort in Aptos.
Beltz on all-tournament, conference teams
Zak Beltz, a senior at Sonoma State University, was named as an honorable mention to the all-conference team in Division I after helping lead his team to second place in the nation.
The team took second in the Gold Division at the National Collegiate Volleyball Club Volleyball Championships on April 4 to 6 in Dallas. The team was the No. 2 seed in a field of 48 teams from around the country.
Sonoma State finished the tournament with a 16-2 record over three days, and Beltz was named to the all-tournament team.
Lacrosse team takes top spot
The under-15 Santa Cruz Warriors lacrosse team is in first place with a 12-0 record after knocking off the Granite Bay Grizzlies in Sacramento last weekend.
The team, which ranks first of 45 teams in the area, as of Wednesday, April 17, had five games remaining in the regular season before it enters the annual Treasure Island postseason tournament.
The team is coached by Steve Gilton and Bill Cleary.
The roster includes Tomas Cleary, Tanner Gilton, Ryan Johnston, Tate Smith, Ian Bast, Josh Eskew, Kyle Merriner, Chris Morrison, Cooper Rains, Tyler Best, James Curci, Baxter Wesson, Scott Birlem, Jakob Bell, Drew Arroyo, Darcy Arzate, Jackson Carver and Gabriel Keet.
Local earns college player of week
Scott Masik, a Scotts Valley resident and Archbishop Mitty High School graduate, was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week for the week of April 8 to 14.
A senior at California State University, Los Angeles, Masik went 6-for-15 with a .867 slugging percentage, including two doubles, a triple and a home run, in the Golden Eagles’ four-game sweep over Cal State East Bay. He scored seven runs and drove in three during the stretch.
Masik leads the conference with a .381 batting average.
Youth basketball team sweeps two
The fifth- and sixth-grade Runnin’ Redwoods AAU Boys Basketball team won two games at a Sunday, April 14, tournament in Santa Clara.
The team, made of players from San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley, defeated the Kings of Fremont 35-13 and Union City 44-36.
Guards Dylan Sandles and Dillon Danner led the scoring for the Redwoods, while Kyle Rajala and Ty Martinez controlled the boards. Garrett Hormel and Chris Anderson played strong defense, said coach Wayne Sandles.
The team is a on a four-game winning streak and improved its record to 13-4.
“These victories were a result of a total team effort,” said Sandles. “The boys played so well together — over half of our baskets were a result of assist passes from a teammate.”
Falcons top Cardinals on diamond
The Scotts Valley High School boys baseball team improved to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play with a 6-2 win over Santa Cruz High on Tuesday, April 16.
The Falcons were led by Abe, Alvarez, who had three stolen bases, including two steals of home.
Alvarez scored three runs, Garrett Johnston had two hits and two RBIs, and Sean Verenkamp tossed a six-hit complete game for the Falcons.
Scotts Valley is on a three-game winning streak, including an 8-7 defeat of Aptos High on Monday, April 15. The Falcons scored two runs in the seventh after Aptos took the lead with three runs in the sixth.
The Falcons are in second place in the SCCAL behind St. Francis, which holds an 8-0 record. The teams face off Tuesday, April 23, in Watsonville.
