Track athletes qualify for sectional finals
A handful of Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley high school athletes qualified for the Central Coast Section track and field finals to be held today, Friday, May 24 at Gilroy High School.
For San Lorenzo Valley, Anna Maxwell qualified in the 1600 with a time of 4 minutes, 54.04 seconds and 3200 in 10:50.03, Claire MacMillan qualified in the 1600 in 5:04.69 and 3200 in 11:26.16 and Cody Johnson qualified in the 800 in 1:55.71.
For Scotts Valley, Scott Edwards qualified in the 1600 in 4:20.42, Hayley Herberg in the 400 in 58.53, and Vanessa Fraser qualified in the 3200 in 10:53.40. The Scotts Valley girls 4×400 relay team also qualified for the final with a time of 4:03.32.
The semifinals took place on Saturday, May 18 at Gilroy High School.
 
Basketball coach heads to NY with team
Scotts Valley’s Dan Mooney will take a team of 30 American Athletic Association basketball players to New York City for a two week basketball camp on July 11. Mooney, 53, an All-American player at University of New Paltz in New York played in Europe, the NBA and Continental Basketball Association. A former basketball coach at Bethany University, Mooney coaches the Monte Vista Christian boys team and heads up the Each One, Teach One Academy which fields AAU teams in Santa Cruz County. The team started as Scotts Valley Basketball Club and has grown from there.
Mooney will take 30 player from Each One, Teach One to New York to visit famous basketball location like the Long Island Garden, Rucker Park, The Cage and meet some of the people who helped support Mooney’s career.
“I’m trying to encourage kids that life is beyond Santa Cruz County,” he said.
As part of the trip, Mooney hopes to call on some of his East Coast contacts to help support the proposed Boys and Girls Club project on Scotts Valley Drive.
 
Man sinks ace at Valley Gardens
Matt Telega of Santa Cruz sank a hole-in-one on the 223-yard fourth hole at Valley Gardens Golf Course in Scotts Valley. Telega, 30, swung a 4-iron to notch the ace on Friday, May 17. The shot was witnessed by Justin Gates and Ryan McNeeley. It was his first hole-in-one.
