Youth football league approaches
The Santa Cruz Mountain Cougars youth football league for players ages 5 to 13 will open its season July 22. Registration is still being accepted for the league for players and cheerleaders. Locals win bocce league
The Apple Valley Rollers won the 2013 Scotts Valley Recreation Spring Bocce league.
The team was 4-1 heading into the final game against the undefeated Hot Shots. The team won, qualifying them for the playoffs where they defeated the Hot Shots a second time and advanced to the championships against the Roaring Lyons. A victory gave the Apple Valley Rollers the Championship. The team includes Kelly Utic, Steve Hammack, Elizabeth Hammack, Emily Doub, Christi Hilton, Mark Hilton, Mike Vierhus and team manager Erin Vierhus.
 
Bocce team places fourth at nationals
The Scotts Valley Bocce Club placed fourth in the 2013 United States Bocce Championships held June 22 at the Italian Athletic Club in Stockton. The team placed fourth of eight teams in the championship series.
 
Scotts Valley golf tournament approaches
The 16th annual Drug Abuse Resistance Education Golf Tournament put on by the Scotts Valley Peace Officer’s Association will take place August 16 at Valley Garden’s Golf Course. The annual tournament raises money for the D.A.R.E program taught to 5th grader students in Scotts Valley, Red Ribbon Week and the Scotts Valley Junior Police Academy. Man sinks ace
Lou Calvisi of Santa Cruz sank a hole-in-one at Valley Garden’s Golf Course in Scotts Valley on July 9. Calvisi, 75, used a driver at the 185-yard fifth hole and the shot was witnessed by Linda Amador and Elaine Love. It was Calvisi’s first hole-in-one in about 60 years of playing golf, he said.
