Hoops squads play at Dad’s Club
Both San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley High School varsity boys basketball teams went 1-2 in the 56th annual Emmet Thompson Memorial Dad’s Club Tournament in Santa Cruz. Games were played, for the first time, at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Both teams defeated Watsonville High during the tournament.
The Cougars fell to Salinas 66-38 on Thursday, Dec. 12, defeated Watsonville 69-45 the next day and lost to Pioneer High of San Jose 53-37 on Saturday. The Falcons fell 67-41 to Soquel, then 68-53 to Pioneer, before defeating Watsonville to take 7th place in the 8-team tournament. Santa Cruz High School won the tournament.
SLV Hall of Fame nominations sought
The San Lorenzo Valley High School Hall of Fame Committee seeks nominations for the school’s athletic hall of fame.
The committee is reforming after its last classes of inductees came in 2005, 2006 and 2007, said Athletic Director Mark Mercer.
Community members may email nominations along with a description including the reason for the nomination to Mercer by email at mm*****@****sd.org. The induction ceremony will take place in March.
Falcon girls back to winning ways
The Scotts Valley High School girls basketball team improved to 6-1 in the preseason with a 73-33 victory over Homestead High of Cupertino on Monday, Dec. 16. The Falcons were led by 17 points each from Charlie Boyle and Angela Silver, while Nadene Hart chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Pony Baseball seeks managers, tryouts approach
Santa Cruz Pony Baseball seeks managers and assistants to coach Pony baseball teams this spring. Those interested may contact President Glenn Robbins at 566-2916.
The league will host a preseason Ice Breaker for any player interested in playing Pony in the spring. The session will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 at Branciforte Middle School, 315 Poplar Avenue in Santa Cruz. It will be a review of Pony rules and a question and answer session for any players coming from little league.
Tryouts will be held for two consecutive Saturdays, January 18 and January 25, at Branciforte Middle School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Only new players to the League are required to try out. The draft will be held after the final tryout. For information: http://scruzpony.clubspaces.com
