SV tennis league to kick off
A player evaluation for the Scotts Valley Junior Team Tennis League will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Scotts Valley High.
The league runs from Oct. 4 through Nov. 8 for boys and girls 7 to 14 years old.
The new six-week program from the U.S. Tennis Association will be for beginner players.
Cost for the league is $65, which includes a T-shirt, awards, USTA membership and an end-of-the-season jamboree.

SV runs at Stevenson relay
Freshman Vanessa Fraser ran the fastest leg of the day (nine minutes, 57 seconds) for the Scotts Valley High varsity girls cross country team, which won the small-school division of the Robert Luis Stevenson Invitational relays Saturday, Sept. 12. Five runners each ran 1.6 miles.
The boys team finished fifth, with Kevin Mangen leading the way for the Falcons in 8:26. The Falcons ran against San Lorenzo Valley and St. Francis in the first dual meet of the season Thursday, Sept. 17, after press time.
SLV boys, girls polo teams fall
The San Lorenzo Valley High boys water polo team fell to 0-2 on the season after losses to Santa Cruz (20-9) and Soquel (21-3). The team looks to bounce back against Harbor on Sept. 24.
The girls fell 19-11 to Soquel High on Sept. 15 and will face Harbor on Sept. 24 as well.
Bethany volleyball drops to 1-7
The Bethany University women’s volleyball team fell to crosstown rival UC Santa Cruz in three sets Wednesday, Sept. 16.
The California Pacific Conference season begins Sept. 25 against Mills College in Oakland. The Bruins’ first conference home game will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 against Menlo College.
