Cougars fall in first round
Despite a game-high 26 points from Nick Salibi, the San Lorenzo Valley High School boys basketball team fell to Harbor High School 71-57 on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The loss in the first round of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League playoffs marked the end of the Cougars season. SLV finished 7-16 overall and 2-10 in league play.
Scotts Valley girls hoops team moves on
The Scotts Valley girls basketball team defeated Santa Cruz High School 71-13 in the quarterfinals of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The Falcons were led by a stout defense and four players in double figures scoring. They play St. Francis on Saturday in the final at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz at 6 p.m.
Local rower shows well
Bob Bach of Soquel, a current Sonoma State junior, competed Sunday, Feb. 16 in the 2014 World Indoor Rowing Championship in Boston, Mass.  
More than 2,000 athletes from the United States, Europe, South America and Australia competed in age, weight and open racing categories. This was Bach’s first year competing at the World Championship. He finished first in the open bullpen race (competing against mixed competitors) and more impressively 4th in the lightweight collegiate category behind the first through third finishers from the Italian Naval Academy, Duke University, and MIT respectively.  
Two weeks ago Bach won for the third year in a row, the lightweight gold medal for the fastest time at the California Golden State Indoor Rowing Championship.  
Bach is a 2011 graduate of Scotts Valley High School where he was on the wrestling and water polo teams.
Youth tennis day to be held in Boulder Creek
Boulder Creek Recreation will host a USTA Tennis Play event after school March 4 through 6 at Boulder Creek Elementary School to celebrate World Tennis Day.
The day is part of a nationwide effort to get kids excited and active in tennis.
Families of all ages are invited to attend and try the sport in a friendly atmosphere.
Kids will use modified equipment that makes it easy for kids to rally and play. Snacks, drinks and prizes will be offered to all participants.
Nationwide, more than 1,000 facilities will host these events in March. During the event, children will have the opportunity to sign up children for spring and summer programs if desiring. For more information or to register contact local tennis pro Matthew McGee at [email protected] or 419-0979.
Wrestling tournament this weekend
The 2014 Central Coast Section wrestling tournament will take place this weekend, Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 at Independence High School in San Jose.
Day 1 will include wrestling from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and semifinals will begin at 9 a.m. on day 2. Finals in each weight class are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Wrestlers from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley High Schools will compete. For more information: www.cifccs.org
