Scotts Valley offers skate camp
Scotts Valley Recreation will host a spring break skate camp, the Santa Cruz Skate Academy for youth ages 3 to 13 years old.
James Pike of Pike’s Surf and Skate will host the camp at the Skypark skate park from March 31 through April 4.
There is a Little Shredders program that teaches youth 3 to 6 years old the very basics of skateboarding. For youth 7 to 13, Pike and his staff will teach more advanced skills, play games and learn more about the sport based on the attendee’s skill levels.
Pike has been teaching surfing and skating for more than 15 years.
Attendees should bring their own skateboards, pads and helmets.

AAU team takes second in tourney
The Runnin’ Redwoods 6-7th grade AAU boys basketball team took second in the Bay Area Mambas March Madness Tournament on March 15. In the first game the Runnin’ Redwoods defeated the Alameda Vipers 38-35.
Ty Martinez scored the first six points of the game, Garrett Hormel knocked down three 3 pointers and Paul Hansen hit two clutch shots down the stretch. In the game’s final minute, with the Redwoods clinging to a 35-34 lead, a Viper player drove hard to the hoop. Redwood’s guard Dylan Sandles came up with a block and outlet pass to Kyle Rajala who converted a lay-up to seal the victory.
In their second win The Redwoods dominated the team from Fremont 62 to 36. Sandles led with 21 points. Hormel and Rajala also scored in double figures. Tom Codiga, Rajala and Martinez provided the Redwoods with a decisive rebounding advantage.
In the final game, The Redwoods fell to host, The Bay Area Mambas 43-34. The Redwoods fell behind by 12 by halftime, but were able to close the deficit to 36-30 late in the game before coming up short. Garrett Hormel hit two three pointers to bring his tournament total to eight.
“I was really proud of the boys today,” said coach Wayne Sandles. “They never quit and played together as a team. After three intensely competitive games they were physically exhausted, but had smiles on their faces. The boys played basketball at a high level today, and had fun. That is always our goal.”
