SV tennis players fall in sections
Scotts Valley High tennis players Malie Collins and the doubles duo of Capella Yee and Kaylie Payne won first-round matches in the Central Coast Section tournament before both falling in the quarterfinals last week.
Collins, seeded eighth, defeated unseeded Marjani Simmons of Santa Teresa, 6-2, 6-4, before falling to second-seeded Kelly Chui of St. Francis of Mountain View, 6-0, 6-2.
Payne and Yee beat Piedmont Hill’s Cynthia Vo and Sherry Jiaa, 6-1, 6-3, and fell to top-seeded Janet Liu and Emma Marti from Palo Alto.
Local soccer team wins region
The Delgado Soccer League, made up of advanced soccer teams from Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Monterey and San Benito counties, finished play last weekend.
From the Scotts Valley-San Lorenzo Valley Soccer Club, the Sting placed first in the girls under-14 division.
Sting players include Sydney Andrews, Eleanor Brock, Adriana Brock, Mikayla Fish, Olivia Gonzalez, Jessica Granger-Jones, Lena Gustafsson, Margi Howard, Melinda Lane, Nicole LaPorte, Anna Maxwell, Raquel Mittelbusher, Synclaire Reyes and Nicole Trenchard. The Sting is coached by Gary Redenbacher.
Other teams from the SV-SLV Soccer Club that placed in the Delgado League were the under-19 girls Pride, coached by Bret Gillis, who finished second; the under-12 girls Pride, coached by Dave Payne, who placed third; and the under-10 boys Wolverines, coached by Greg Olsen, who came in third.
Free golf lessons from a pro
Former PGA professional Jack Doss offers free golf instruction at Ralston Rods and Tackle, 5500 Scotts Valley Drive, in Scotts Valley.
Doss, a 30-year Scotts Valley resident, is available for half-hour pro bono lessons from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.
Doss’ credentials include a tie with David Toms for the low score at Baton Rouge Country Club in Louisiana after shooting a 63. He also spent time working at Silverado Golf Club and Pasatiempo Golf Club.
A $10 charge is payable to Ralston Rods for use of the space.

SLV Little League registration
After some technical difficulties, online registration is up and running for San Lorenzo Valley Little League. Players can visit www.slvlittleleague.org and follow the link to register online.
Walk-in registration sessions will run from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the San Lorenzo Valley High School staff room, 7105 Highway 9, in Felton; and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at Boulder Creek Elementary School, 400 W. Lomond St., in Boulder Creek.
Prices will increase by $20 per child Dec. 19.
