Bocce league finishes season, ready to start another
The Scotts Valley Senior Center concluded play in the spring bocce ball league with a playoff tournament and a barbecue.
Overall winners were the Young Whippersnappers, a Thursday team. Members were captain Phyllis Levine, Sandy Welch, Bev Johnson and Maurice Martinez.
First runner-up was the Monday team consisting of captain Vic Ramirez, Margaret Schraft, Dave Wilson and Carol Beck.
Also in the competition was a Tuesday team of captain Diane Mattox, Zora Dennis, Patti Fickett and Rich Asbury.
The summer bocce ball session starts this week. Play is open to men and women older than 50. Bocce experience is not needed, as free lessons are given.

Special Olympics set up at UC Davis
About 700 Special Olympics athletes from 32 Northern California counties will compete June 25 through 27 at University of California, Davis.
The opening ceremony June 25 will consist of a Wall of Honor made up of law enforcement personnel, including Scotts Valley Police Department Lt. John Hohman. The Special Olympics torch travels through Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley on Friday, June 18.
The summer games is the largest Special Olympics sporting competition in Northern California and showcases four areas of competition — aquatics, bocce, tennis and track and field.
SLV adult softball season opens
The IOOF San Lorenzo Valley softball league opened this week with several games that finished after press time.
The men’s summer league has 11 teams, and the co-ed recreational A and B leagues have five teams each.
Games are played Wednesdays and Thursdays from Tuesday, June 15, until Aug. 9 at Highlands Park, 8500 Highway 9, with games beginning at 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Pop Warner pep rally planned
Sign-ups are ongoing for San Lorenzo Valley Pop Warner football and cheerleading. A pep rally is scheduled for July 24 at the San Lorenzo Valley High School junior varsity baseball field, 7105 Highway 9, in Felton. There will be games, food, a bounce house and a raffle to kick off the Pop Warner season.

Summer soccer camps take registration
The Scotts Valley-San Lorenzo Valley Soccer Club academy is accepting players for three weeks of soccer camps this summer at Skypark in Scotts Valley. The camps run the weeks of July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9.
Children ages 3 through 16 are accepted at camp, and there is a special clinic for goalkeepers as well.
