Pony All-Stars advance
The Santa Cruz Pony 13 All-Star team, which is made up of Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley players (the leagues were combined this year) took second place in last week’s sectional all-star tourney in Watsonville. The team advanced to this week’s regional tournament in Campbell but fell 5-1 to Watsonville in the championship. Pitchers were Jake Carli, Jared Mailey and Riley Hilton, who went 4-2.
Nate Gentry, Ryan Traulsen, Jake Lobo, Jared Mailey and Dave Snider all hit well, and catcher Lobo picked off five runners and threw out four potential base stealers during the tournament.
Hire a Falcon continues
At a rate of $10 an hour, members of the Scotts Valley High varsity football team raised more than $5,000 for their team since April. Faced with the task of needing $1,200 per player for their upcoming season, many Falcon football players have taken odd jobs this spring raise money. The players have done mostly yard work but they also helped with moving, landscaping and various other projects. They’ve done dump runs, pet-sitting and even helped at children’s birthday parties.
The Hire a Falcon program will continue through the end of this summer. The suggested donation is $10 per player per hour. Players generally travel to jobs in pairs and provide their own transportation.
