Bruin named player of week
Rachael Walters of Bethany University was selected as the California Pacific Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the week. The sophomore had a double-double for the Bruins on Jan. 1, scoring 26 points with 10 rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block in the Bruins’ 74-67 win over La Sierra University.
The Bruins played Cal State Maritime Academy after press time Thursday, Jan. 6, and will host Holy Names University in Scotts Valley on Saturday, Jan. 8. The women play at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.
Former SLV coach wins state title
Former San Lorenzo Valley High varsity football coach Earl Hansen, now coaching at Palo Alto High, won his first California Interscholastic Federation Division I football title over the nationally ranked Centennial High of Corona, 15-13.
Hansen was voted the ESPN Rise Cal-Hi Sports State Coach of the Year for the 2010 season. Palo Alto upset Centennial on Dec. 17 as the Vikings finished the season 14-0.
It was Hansen’s second state championship game appearance. His team lost to Lutheran High School of Orange, 42-28, in the Division II championships in 2006.
Hansen coached the Cougars from 1983 to 1987 before handing over the reins to veteran coach Doug Morris. During that time, he racked up a 16-31-1 record.
Falcon girls open league with win
Jordan Carlson and Taylor Rohde scored two goals each as the Scotts Valley High girls soccer team (4-3-1 overall, 1-0 in league) defeated St. Francis High, 7-0, on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The Falcons’ defense, headed by senior captain Aly Bothman and junior captain Kalynn Morano, allowed zero shots on goal. Olivia Gonzales, Rachel Malone, and Rachel Dunbridge scored a goal each for the Falcons.
Scotts Valley played after press time Thursday at San Lorenzo Valley High.
Cougars fall in league openers
The San Lorenzo Valley High girls soccer team lost to undefeated Harbor High 3-0 on Monday, Jan. 3, at SLV. Despite 10 saves by goalkeeper Patricia Hulter, the Pirates moved to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in league. The Cougars’ record fell to 4-3-1, 0-1 in league.
The SLV boys basketball team fell to Aptos 69-45 in the first game of league play. The Cougars (5-8) had no scorers in double digits as they fell to 0-1 in the SCCAL.
The SLV girls also dropped to 0-1 in league, losing their season opener at Aptos 54-20.
