Scotts Valley wrestlers fall to Aptos
Aptos High School retained its grip on the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League with its 13th straight dual meet victory Tuesday, Feb. 15, beating Scotts Valley 44-29. The Falcons started strong with wins from Jake Revino (pin) and Grant Margerum (technical fall), but Aptos reversed the trend quickly, and all five of its seniors won their matches.
Scotts Valley is in second place in league with a 4-1 record in dual meets. Aptos is 5-0.
Hole-in-one update
Page Nance, 41, of Soquel, hit his first hole-in-one on the eighth hole at Valley Gardens Golf Course on Feb. 1. Nance used his 6 iron on the 166-yard hole. After playing golf since he was 12 years old, he finally sank the elusive hole-in-one.
Bethany hoops nets first win
Bethany University junior Marqus Crawford was selected as the California Pacific Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week following the Bruins’ 57-55 win over Pacific Union College on Feb. 10.
Crawford, a native of Morgan Hill, averaged 20.5 points, four rebounds, one assist and 2.5 steals in the Bruins’ 1-1 week.
In the win, Crawford scored 18 points. He also scored 23 points in a 58-53 loss to William Jessup University on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Bike ride registration begins
Registration has begun for the annual Mountain Charlie Challenge pledge ride to benefit Scotts Valley’s public schools. The ride is scheduled for April 23.
There are 100-kilometer and 50-kilometer rides. Both start and end at Skypark and trek around Santa Cruz County. Lunch, support and refreshments are provided.

Bethany softball wins
The Bethany University softball team toppled U.C. Merced, 21-0, in preseason play Saturday.
SLV boys soccer beats Aptos
Alex Rinkert assisted in two SLV goals and scored one Tuesday as the Cougars beat the hosting Aptos Mariners, 4-0. Rinkert fired a pass to David Kamau for a seventh-minute goal in the first half and then scored in the 35th minute. He had an assist to Thomas McIntosh who found the back of the net in the 40th minute.
Micah Chase scored the final goal in the second half, and Joseph McNally made three saves in the shutout. SLV (5-11-2, 4-6-1 SCCAL) capped the season Wednesday, Feb. 16, against St. Francis. Results were not available before press time.
