Scotts Valley to host opening day ceremony
Opening day for Scotts Valley Little League is scheduled for Saturday, March 12 from8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Scotts Valley Little League fields at Siltanen Park. Festivities will take place throughout the day.
Wrestlers seasons ends at state
San Lorenzo Valley’s Logan Kellogg was the only wrestler from the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League to represent the area in the state finals at the RaboBank arena in Bakersfield March 4. Kellogg was defeated in the second round by Paul Yoo of Cypress High School. The 189-pound Cougars standout was ranked 11th in the state in his weight class, but lost in a 6-3 decision to Yoo. Kellogg, a senior, went on to beat Sheldon’s Roger Baines 6-5 in the consolation bracket, followed by a 3-1 win over Sierra’s Conner Cunningham, but lost 16-7 against Steve Arrambide in his final match.
Shelby Baker, a girls wrestler from Scotts Valley High, finished No. 8 overall at the girls state wrestling championships at Leemoore High School on February 25 and 26.
SLV opens track season
Alex Rinkert and Cody Johnson of San Lorenzo Valley High School, both earned three top finishes at the Santa Cruz County relays at Aptos High on Saturday, Mar. 5. Rinkert and Johnson led their relay teams in the sprint medley, 4×400 meter relay and distance medley relay. The Cougars also won the 4×100 meter relay and the pole vault.
Cougars toss no-no
A San Lorenzo Valley High School pitching combo put together a no-hitter in a 17-0 thumping on host Jefferson High on March 5. Scott Petrosky pitched the first four innings for the Cougars and struck out six batters. Devan Carothers entered in relief and struck out six in two innings before Dylan Hage capped it with a perfect seventh.
A fifth-inning walk denied the bid for a perfect game. Petrosky went 3-for-5 at the plate, including a double and four RBIs. Billy Mullins went 4-for-5 with a triple and four runs scored.
