Locals shine at Stanford Invitational
SLV and Scotts Valley made a big splash in the distance events at the prestigious Stanford Invitational track meet Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26.
San Lorenzo Valley freshman Anna Maxwell ran the mile in 5 minutes, 11.3 seconds, which gives her the top time in the Central Coast Section.
The SLV boys 4-by-400 relay team took third in its heat with a time of 3:33.20, and Nick Hicks finished fifth overall in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:03.26.
The SLV girls 4-by-400 team grabbed a second-place finish in its heat with a time of 4:12.41, and the 4-by-800 relay team took first in its heat, winning in 4:12.41.
Scotts Valley sophomore Vanessa Fraser took third for her heat in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:20.88. Fraser and Maxwell are the top two ranked milers in the CCS.
Local swimmers compete at Junior Olympics
Scotts Valley siblings Connor Lemmon and Bailey Lemmon swam in the Junior Olympic Swim Championships March 18 – 20 in Livermore.
The Lemmons attend Twin Lakes Christian School and swim for the Cabrillo Threshers Swim team.
Connor, an 11-year-old in sixth grade, qualified in the 1,650 freestyle, and Bailey, an 8-year-old fourth-grader, swam in seven events, the maximum allowed at the Junior Olympic Swim Championships. She has nine Junior Olympic qualifying times and three qualifying times for the Pacific Swimming Far Western Championships, which began Thursday, March 31, and will conclude Sunday, April 3, at the Morgan Hill Aquatic center. The Far Western Championship is the next step after the Junior Olympic championship.
SLV wins ‘Duel in the Pool’
On Friday, March 25, San Lorenzo Valley defeated Scotts Valley High in both girls and boys varsity swimming.
SLV and Scotts Valley split the events, each winning six of 12, but the difference came down to numbers: SLV was able to place two or three scoring swimmers in each event, while SVHS placed one or two.
For Scotts Valley, Camille Huxtable, Aria Leonard, Elizabeth Von Hanaulter and Savannah Wohlstattar won the 200-meter medley relay in 2 minutes, 13.44 seconds, and Leonard won the 100 freestyle in a personal-best 58.19 seconds.
Boys volleyball
After dropping the first game to the Soquel Knights on Tuesday, the SLV Cougars boys volleyball team rallied and won the match 19-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20.
Jared Johnson led the rally for SLV with 13 kills, and Nick Gorman added another 10 with 16 assists. Xavier Chavez dished out 23 assists for the Cougars (12-2 overall).
