Cougar softball takes third
The San Lorenzo Valley High School softball team placed third at the two-weekend-long Steinbeck Classic Tournament earlier this month.
The Cougars opened with back-to-back 4-0 and 4-3 wins over King City and Live Oak, respectively, on April 2 before finishing the tournament Saturday, April 9, with a 5-0 loss to Gilroy and a 5-3 win over Presentation in the third-place game.
Kendra Salagsang, Mariah Lindberg and Kaitlyn Lotz shared pitching duties during the tournament.
Falcons roll in lacrosse
The Scotts Valley High School lacrosse team defeated the San Rafael Dawgs, 14-2, in a non-league game played at Santa Cruz High School on Monday, April 11.
Collin Corbella and Wesley Koenig led the team with three goals and three assists each, followed by Mitchell Curtiss with three goals. Hunter Black, Ari Wargon, Robbie McClure and Bradley McClarnon also scored.
Previously, the Falcons, 5-0 in league, bested Santa Cruz 22-10 on Friday, April 8. Corbella led the Falcons with seven goals and three assists. Jake Rehnberg scored and assisted on two, and Reza Dabir helped with two assists. Tre Braquet, a senior captain, stepped in as goalie and made seven saves.
Cougars, Falcons fall in volleyball
San Lorenzo Valley lost to Mount Madonna in three games, falling 25-22, 25-11, 25-15 on Tuesday, April 12.
Mount Madonna is undefeated in league play and sits atop the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League with a 12-0 record, 24-7 overall. Nick Gorman led the Cougars with seven kills and Jared Johnson had six, but the 9-4 Cougars couldn’t find an answer for the Mount Madonna defense.
Harbor beat Scotts Valley (0-7 SCCAL) in five games, 24-26, 25-20, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13, in a tight league match Tuesday.
SLV played at Aptos and Scotts Valley played Pacific Collegiate School after press time Thursday, April 14.
Falcon softball splits a pair
The Soquel Knights beat host Scotts Valley, 10-0, in a mercy-rule-shortened game Tuesday.
For Soquel (11-2, 4-1 SCCAL), Faith Apolskis went 2-for-3 with a double. For the Falcons (8-5, 3-1), starter Nikki Owens gave up four earned runs on five hits in four innings and struck out four batters. At the plate, Scotts Valley’s Angela Merring went 2-for-2.
Earlier this week, Owens threw 15 strikeouts in a 4-1 win over Harbor High.

Golf tournament on tap in SV
The Scotts Valley Falcon Club will host its 11th annual golf tournament at 11 a.m. April 29 at De Laveaga Golf Course. The format will be best ball scramble, and the entry fee is $150 per person. Proceeds benefit Scotts Valley High sports.
