Local golfer makes good
Scotts Valley High School alumna and San Jose State junior Jennifer Brumbaugh finished third in the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championships on April 17 at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. Brumbaugh helped the Spartans capture their third WAC title in a row.
She shot a career-best at 1-over-par finishing with a score of 72 in the final round to card a three-round 220.
San Jose State finished with a 884 team score to edge out New Mexico State by two strokes for the win. The victory gave the Spartans an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals at the Washington National Golf Club in Seattle, Wash., May 5 through 7.
Equestrian rider competes
Mei Curry, a 14 year old from Scotts Valley, traveled with the Glenwood Equestrian Center to the Seven Oaks Dressage Extravaganza in Portola Valley on April 10.
She competed in two dressage events with her thoroughbred horse, Rain. Curry won second place in her class with a score that counts toward eligibility for the Seven Oaks Dressage Extravaganza Championship in October. Curry trains with Dee White of the Scotts Valley’s Glenwood Equestrian Center, owned by Scotts Valley resident, Dorothy Wise.
Hole in one alert
Jim Kooper hit his first hole in one at Valley Gardens Golf Course on April 17 on the 108-yard third hole. Kooper, a 71 year old semi-retired barber from Los Gatos, has been playing golf for the last six years and used his 4 iron to knock in his first ace. The shot was witnessed by Ian Nyquist, Russ Black, and Harry Davis.
Falcon boys golf
Tom Flebbe earned medalist honors for Scotts Valley with a score of 33 at Valley Gardens Golf Course, but the Falcons (2-8) fell to league leading Aptos High (9-1) 186-178 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play April 19. Teammate Colton Marshal shot a respectable 34 on the nine hole course. Aptos had three golfers with 34’s including Ian Barbiery who sank a hole-in-one on the third hole.
Vargas Academy takes home the gold
Vargas Academy of Gymnastic Arts captured 48 award winning medals at the Northern California’s Tumbling and Trampoline State Championships.
Vargas gymnasts won 20 gold, 18 silver and 10 bronze medals at the competition held last weekend in Rocklin.
“I was very proud and impressed with my team,” coach Vern Vargas said. “I was pleased to see the amazing talents of my 16 athletes competing at state championships”
Team members that competed include: Kailey McDonell, Kristin Renn, Bryanna Wagner, Tiki Mattingly, Lulu Mattingly, Sophia Davis, Grant Simmons, Pailin Demeo, Wyatt Stoker, William Lansdowne, Jared Farst, Ethan Hasenauer, Connel Wilson, Sam English, Alec Scott, and Buddy Takemoto.
Amongst the 297 athletes that participated, Vargas Academy had 16 athletes compete in all three events, double mini-trampoline, trampoline and power tumbling.
The athletes all qualified to compete at the National Tumbling & Trampoline Championships in San Antonio, Texas in July. About 1,500 athletes will compete in the national competition.
