Local sinks an albatross
Mike Lunneborg of Ben Lomond sank an albatross — also known as a double-eagle — at Blackhorse Golf Club on Aug. 14.
Lunneborg sank his second shot on a par-5 12th hole using a 5-wood.
Lunneborg, who claims a 15-stroke handicap, shot a 4-over-par 76 on the day.
“He carved it around the turn,” said Larry Packer of Scotts Valley, who was golfing in front of Lunneborg’s group, regarding the shot. “It wasn’t a one-and-done deal. He played well the whole day.”
A group of eight local golfers were celebrating a birthday when the shot occurred.
Tom Rienke of Ben Lomond, Lonnie Moseley of Ben Lomond and Todd Hager of Santa Cruz were part of Lunneborg’s foursome, and Packer, John Packer of Scotts Valley, Manny Alvarez of Scotts Valley and Art Freitas of Santa Cruz were in the foursome in front.
SLV alumnus signs with NFL’s Rams
San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate Nick Johnson signed a contract to be a member of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams practice squad this season.
Johnson, a 23-year-old wide receiver, was signed to the practice squad Aug. 30 after participating in the Rams preseason workouts and playing in the team’s preseason games. Members of the practice squad typically practice with the regular team, but are not eligible to play in regular-season games unless promoted to the full 53-man active roster.
He was cut from the 53-man active roster, but signed with the Rams practice squad for a reported $150 per day.
