SLV water polo sneaks past Aptos
San Lorenzo Valley High School’s girl’s water polo team improved to 4-1 in league play with a 7-6 win over Aptos High School on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
Goalie Brooke Fultz made 12 saves for the Cougars and Marissa Petras and Hayley Smith chipped in two goals each to lead the scoring.
On September 14 the Cougars trounced Stevenson High School 20-0 as Petras and Cameron Kellogg each scored 4 goals and Hayley Smith added three to lead the team. Fultz made 7 saves in the shut out.  
 
Visiting Cougars thrash Hillsdale
San Lorenzo Valley High School’s varsity football team scored nine touchdowns en-route to a 59-8 victory over Hillsdale High School in San Mateo on Saturday, Sept. 15.
The Cougars. 2-1 in the preseason, jumped out to a 31-0 lead by halftime on a first quarter 37-yard field goal by Ben Knudson. In the second quarter Derek Poetzinger scored a 38-yard touchdown run, Robbie Biagiotti ran in from 16 yards, Poetzinger scored on a 1-yard plunge and Jason Bryson had an 80-yard scoring run.
In the third quarter Poetzinger scored on a 63-yard run, followed by a 50-yard scoring strike from quarterback Isaac Newberry to Lucas Sinnott, a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown by Robbie D’Amato and a 2-yard scoring run by Knudson.
Hillsdale scored its lone touchdown in the 4th quarter.
Poetzinger led the way with 12 carries for 147 yards and three touchdowns. D’Amato had two interceptions and Dylan Miller added one for the Cougars. SLV travels to Watsonville High School to face the Wildcats in the final preseason game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
 
Scotts Valley falls in defensive battle
Scotts Valley High School’s varsity football team fell to Le Grand Union High School 14-6 in a defensive battle on Friday, Sept. 14 in Le Grand. The Falcons fell to 1-2 in the preseason and host Bear River High School from Grass Valley at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22.
In the game, Le Grand jumped out to a 14-0 lead on two touchdowns in the first five minutes, but did not score after that.
Kicker Jack Lavery booted two field goals for the Falcons, who could not push the ball into the end zone.
Ari Wargon carried 25 times for 110 yards to lead the Falcons. Quarterback Garrett Johnston went 8-for-15 for 86 yards, ran seven times for 70 yards and had an interception on defense.
 
Girls golf falls
Scotts Valley High School’s Jemina and Jalena Cheyiam shot 34 on the first six holes at DeLaveaga Golf Course, but the Falcons fell 165-203 to Santa Cruz High School on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The Falcons are 1-1 on the young season.
