Both the Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley high school football teams opened the preseason with wins — SLV in dominating fashion and Scotts Valley with a gutsy second half surge against a strong opponent.

San Lorenzo Valley High debuted a fast-paced, no-huddle offense while Scotts Valley High showed what makes it one of the teams to beat, when both squads competed during the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League preseason jamboree Aug. 24 at Cabrillo College.

Several days before the first day of school, cross country teams from San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley high schools were running in the 90-degree heat to prepare for the season.

Coming off an uncharacteristic 4-6 season in 2011, the San Lorenzo Valley High varsity football team has a relatively small squad of talented and smart athletes.

Following the 2012 graduation of Colin Corbella, the single-season rushing leader for Scotts Valley High and second-leading rusher in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League history, the Falcons varsity football team had some mighty shoes to fill.

 

Cory Nounnan crossed the finish line of the Santa Cruz Sprint 4 Fun triathlon in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 28.5 seconds — roughly 0.4 seconds ahead of his mother, Leean Nounnan.
