A longtime San Lorenzo Valley metaphysical gift shop will move to Scotts Valley later this month.
Scotts Valley resident Karen Diamond will host the grand opening of Virgo Rising’s new home in the conspicuous A-frame building in the Nob Hill parking lot, 220-C Mount Hermon Road, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 4. There will be free tarot and astrology readings from noon to 4 p.m.
The store sells metaphysical and unique gifts, candles, crystals, clothing, books and jewelry of all kinds.
“There’s something for everybody,” Diamond said.
In the new space, Diamond will host readings and classes in a remodeled upstairs room. She said she is still looking for people to give readings and teach classes.
Diamond got into the gift shop business almost 20 years ago. Traveling the country selling jewelry, she had become acquainted many craftspeople. She settled down in the county and began her retail business as an earring store in Ben Lomond on June 1, 1992.
Diamond named the shop Virgo Rising after a line in Kenny Loggins’ classic tune “Danny’s Song.”
“Also, I’m a Virgo, but you don’t have to be a Virgo to shop there,” she said.
Eleven years ago, Diamond moved the shop to downtown Felton, near New Leaf Market, to gain visibility. Now, she’s having a sale at the storefront at 6264-A Highway 9 through Jan. 21 in preparation for another move.
Why move to Scotts Valley?
“It’s closer to home, and I wanted to establish a presence before the town center is complete and Scotts Valley becomes bigger and better,” Diamond said. “I’d also like to bring something new and different to Scotts Valley, and I certainly am different than everybody in Scotts Valley.”
She’s remodeled the new store and said she is pleased with the Ow family, which owns the Kings Village Shopping Center.
“Capture the magic — that’s what we’ve done over the last 19½ years,” Diamond said.
