California’s state budget is taking its toll on Scotts Valley schools.
Six full time teaching positions at Scotts Valley elementary schools will likely go unfilled next year and the equivalent of 3.2 full time positions cut at Scotts Valley High School.
“We’re hoping for fewer positions than that,” Superintendent Susan Silver said.
The district credits declining revenue from a variety of sources related to California’s fiscal crisis in Sacramento.
District trustees will convene tomorrow, March 9, at 6 p.m. at Scotts Valley City Council Chambers, 1 Civic Center Drive to discuss and vote on the proposed cuts.
In total, the district is expected to eliminate 9.2 full-time teaching positions – six at the elementary schools through attrition and retirement and the equivalent of 3.2 positions being cut at the high school.
The final layoff notices are issued on May 15 for the 2010-2011 school year and the depending on enrollment and funding from the State of California, the district could re-hire some during the summer, Silver said.
She hopes the district will be able to re-hire teachers during the summer when enrollment numbers are set.
Part time positions in math, science, social studies, Spanish, physical education, performing arts, English and English language development at the high school will recieve notices.
