Steve Walpole will be sworn in as Chief of Police for the City of Scotts Valley in ceremonies at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, June 1 at the City Council Chambers, 1 Civic Center Drive.
Walpole has been interim chief for five and one-half months, appointed after former Chief John Weiss retired in December after 10 years as the city’s top law enforcement officer.
The new chief follows in the footsteps of his father, Stephen Walpole, who was chief of police in Scotts Valley for 15 years until he retired in 2001 after 31 years with the department.
Walpole started his career with the Scotts Valley Police Department in 2014 after serving sixteen years in law enforcement with the Town of Los Gatos. His salary of $123,300 is the third highest among city employees.
He is a lifelong resident of Scotts Valley who left the area to attend college at Southern Oregon University, where he earned a degree in criminology.
As a lieutenant, Walpole implemented initiatives that have served as a catalyst for community engagement, public safety, and operational effectiveness.
He and his wife Melissa have two sons, Stephen and Tobin.
