Students at Brook Knoll Elementary School in Scotts Valley are hitting the books once again as the school year gets underway. They’re hitting the wall, too. With a mural, that is.
Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 10, veteran art instructor Kim Fleming began work on a mural on the side of one of the campus’ portable classrooms that is designed to capture the essence of life at Brook Knoll Elementary in 2013.
The mural project is part of the Brook Knoll’s inaugural Eagle Week — a celebration of school pride and all things related to the eagle, the school’s mascot.
According to Principal Shar Ransom, more than 80 students submitted designs for the mural, which were presented anonymously to, and voted on, by teachers and staff.
Due to a tie vote, two students — fourth grader Kiana Mushock, and third grader Hannah Fleming — were declared winners and their designs combined for the final mural.
The design combines images of an eagle, the ocean, and trees, along with images of the various programs at the school.
While the mural is being painted, each student in each classroom will have a hand in painting on the project, to ensure that all members of the campus have a stake in it.
“All 557 students will have a hand in painting it,” Ransom said.
