Surf team moves to 3-1

The Santa Cruz Mountains Surf Team won two more contests in the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League in the past month, bringing their season record to 3-1. 
Most recently the team defeated Aptos High School 73-46 on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Pleasure Point in clean conditions ranging mostly from waist to shoulder high surf. A building swell gave the athletes a wide variety of waves to choose from.  
The top three surfers in each heat from the morning’s competition advanced to individual rounds against top performers from five other school teams later in the day.
From the SC Mountains team, surfers who advanced to individual competition included: Mateo Rocamora (San Lorenzo Valley High School), Sophie Northcott (SLV), April Martin-Hansen (SLV), Evan Milnes (Scotts Valley High School), and Brett Klotz (Scotts Valley).
Shelby Robinett, Luke Colosi and Paul Colosi from St. Francis High in Watsonville also represented SC Mountains in individual competition. Martin-Hansen of SLV and Meredith Barton of Scotts Valley (who was entered in the semifinal rounds as an alternate) made the finals, with Martin-Hansen taking sixth place overall in women’s shortboard and Barton taking fifth overall in women’s longboard.
This victory followed the team’s January 18 win over Soquel/Cypress High
In that contest, also held at Pleasure Point, the SC Mountain Team was victorious 67-54.
Standouts from the local team who made it through to individual competition that day included: Quinn Lydon (SLV), Northcott (SLV), Martin-Hansen (SLV), Rocamora (SLV),  Milnes (SV), and Barton (SV) as well as Robinett and Luke and Paul Colosi of St. Francis High.
On the podium, Northcott wound up third overall in women’s shortboard while Barton placed sixth in women’s shortboard, and Milnes too third overall in bodyboard.
The final contest of the SCSSL season will be held at Steamer Lane on March 9. The Santa Cruz Mountains team will face off against tough competition from Half Moon Bay High School, which was ranked second in the league last year. If the team beats Half Moon Bay, they will take second place in the standings for the season.
