Suspected mail thief nabbed after video footage from Boulder Creek

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies on Monday arrested a Santa Cruz man after he was caught on video surveillance stealing mail in Boulder Creek.

Richard Gilreath, 54, had mail from roughly 50 victims, sheriff’s spokeswoman Ashley Keehn said.

He was wanted on warrants from Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties, she said.

Gilreath faces 34 charges, including mail theft, possession of stolen IDs, possession of a controlled substance and passing a fake check. He was being held in Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail, jail records showed.

He was identified when deputies recognized him in video footage of him stealing mail from a bank of mailboxes that was shared on social media, Keehn said.
