SV alumnus Erlin traded to Padres
In somewhat of a surprise move, Scotts Valley High alumnus Robby Erlin was traded from the Texas Rangers organization to the San Diego Padres Double-A affiliate.
Erlin, who was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2009, was promoted from the single-A Hickory Crawdads to the advanced single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans last season and then promoted to Double-A Frisco (Texas) RoughRiders in May this year.
This season Erlin is 8-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 20 games between Class A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Frisco.
On July 31, Erlin, along with 21-year-old righty Joe Wieland were traded to the San Diego Padres double-A San Antonio Missions for major league reliever Mike Adams.
The move was made at the trade deadline to shore up the Texas Rangers bullpen as they make a push toward the playoffs while strengthening the Padres minor league system.
“I have mixed feelings on it. It’s kind of bittersweet,” Erlin told Corey Brock of MLB.com. “I’m looking forward to playing in the Padres organization, but I’m really going to hate leaving the Rangers organization and all the people I’ve met.”
The Padres play in the National League West division meaning that once Erlin is called up to the major leagues, projected by scouts in a year or two, a number of his games would be against the San Francisco Giants.
