Police resubmitted a report regarding a double stabbing last week in Santa Cruz, an incident in which a Scotts Valley man is the prime suspect.
“We looked at the case again and did several re-interviews,” Santa Cruz police spokesman Zach Friend said.
Friend said police sent the report back to the district attorney’s office Monday, Dec 7.
Twenty-year-old Jabriel Levi Grisell of Scotts Valley was arrested at about 9 p.m. Nov. 28 on suspicion of stabbing two men at a party in Santa Cruz that same night, but he was released from jail a few days later.
Grisell, who is identified as a landscaper in Santa Cruz County Jail records, was booked on charges of attempted murder and assault and initially held on $375,000 bail. Because charges were not filed against him within 48 hours of his arrest, however, he legally had to be released from custody, and he left county jail Dec. 1.
Friend said Grisell, who has no adult criminal record, is reported to have knifed two acquaintances after an argument during a poker game turned physical.
The two men were stabbed at 8 p.m. Nov. 28 on the 100 block of Felix Street in Santa Cruz.
The district attorney’s office had prepared to file charges, but new information surfaced that is now under investigation and the initial charges are on hold, assistant district attorney Dave Genochio said last week.
Genochio said there were inconsistencies in statements given by victims and witnesses, though police said Grisell remains a suspect.
According to police, Grisell and a 22-year-old man got into an argument that grew heated. Grisell then reportedly pulled a knife and stabbed the 22-year-old, Friend said. Another 20-year-old man who lives in the apartment was also stabbed when he reportedly tried to break up the fight. Alcohol was involved, according to police.
People at the party told police they didn’t know what the two argued about and said Grisell and the 22-year-old were friends.
