A Scotts Valley Middle School student is on her way to a national gymnastics competition.
Justine Goeury, 12, of Scotts Valley, finished fourth among 90 gymnasts in the Nor Cal Judges Cup Qualifier on Saturday, Dec. 8, and qualified to compete in the National Judges Cup Level 7 meet Jan. 4 to 6 in Daytona, Fla.
Level 7 gymnasts, as designated by USA Gymnastics, are able to choose their own routines for the first time, in addition to completing compulsory skills.
Goeury, who trains at Airborne Gymnastics in Santa Clara, took first place in balance beam and finished with an all-around score of 37.400, tying her with three other girls. She also competed in uneven bars, vault and floor exercise.
The regional competition took place in Stockton and included gymnasts of all ages.
Six gymnasts from Northern California — including Goeury, in her first national competition — will represent the region in Daytona. The Nor Cal gymnasts will compete as a team during the competition to try to defend the 2011 championship.
The National Judges Cup will pay for Goeury’s expenses, including airfare and lodging during the trip to Florida.
