Scotts Valley High senior Vanessa Fraser will head into the state cross-country meet Nov. 24 with two championships under her belt.
After blazing past the competition in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League meet Nov. 3, Fraser did the same thing Saturday, Nov. 10, at Toro Park in Salinas, winning the Central Coast Section Division IV girls title by 42 seconds.
Fraser finished the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 42 seconds, ahead of San Lorenzo Valley’s Claire MacMillan (18:24), who finished second, and SLV’s Anna Maxwell (18:56), third.
The Scotts Valley and SLV girls teams both qualified for the state meet. SLV won the meet with 67 points, and Scotts Valley was second with 83 points.
Jessica Jensen (15th, 20:07), Jessica Germany (19th, 20:28), Emily Lamb (34th, 21:30), MacMillan and Maxwell contributed to SLV’s winning score.
In addition to Fraser, Valerie Morrison (16th, 20:19), Courtney Clark (22nd, 20:32), Hayley Herberg (26th, 20:55) and Mikaela Inman (27th, 20:56) scored for the Falcons.
Boys
The Scotts Valley boys team finished third in the CCS meet and qualified for the state championships, while SLV finished 11th but had one individual qualify for the state meet.
Falcon junior Scott Edwards took fifth overall, covering the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 20 seconds, just 15 seconds behind the leader.
Other Scotts Valley runners included Nick Heath (19th, 17:04), Brett Klotz (22nd, 17:06), Draven Hawk (28th, 17:21) and John Ross (35th, 17:28).
The Cougars — who competed without top runner Cody Johnson, who was sidelined with a leg injury — Jacob Hicks set the pace and achieved a solid eighth-place finish in 16:28, qualifying for the state meet as an individual.
He was followed by Stephen Bracken (39th, 17:34), Ian Campbell (66th, 18:42), Matt Abernathy (73rd, 18:51) and Eli Young (74th, 18:52).
The runners who qualified for state will race Nov. 24 in Fresno.
