Measure H: Santa Cruz County’s Affordable Housing Bond

The housing affordability crisis across the state has inspired several measures on the Nov. 6 ballot. A local response is Measure H, which if approved will authorize the county to issue up to $140 million in general obligation bonds, generating an estimated $8.6 million annually to fund affordable housing throughout the county. The total price tag for the principal and interest of these 35 year bonds is estimated at about $274 million-almost double the face value of the proposed bond issue.

Creating a Butterfly Garden

Butterflies are magical creatures. They captivate us with their beauty and freedom of flight. Often I’m asked when designing a garden to include plants that will attract them and design areas to provide habitat. Recently there was a hatch of orange Militta Crescent butterflies in our area. I’ve seen hundreds of them up here in Bonny Doon alone. What can I do to increase the chances of them sticking around ?

Next steps for marijuana regulations

Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors approved a draft of rules and regulations for growing marijuana for commercial sale at a special meeting on Feb. 5. The proposed ordinances, with several recommendations made by various supervisors, now go to the Planning Commission for review. More public input will be requested on Feb. 28 before being returned to the Board of Supervisors for an additional hearing and final adoption in March.
