Rarely does a person give back so much to the neighborhood she settled in as Vicki Wees. Wees, now 64-years-old, first moved into a rented house in the Felton Grove neighborhood in 1979, when she was 25. Except for a few years here and there, Wees has lived in Felton Grove ever since. About 10 years ago, as something of a hobby, Wees began collecting historic photographs, documents and maps of the Felton Grove neighborhood.

District manager of SLVWD resigns

As of August 9, Brian Lee, District Manager for the San Lorenzo Valley Water District has resigned from his position. His last day at the district will be August 31. According to Lee, his resignation has nothing to do with his job or the district, but he has a family reason on why he must resign. 

SLVHS Varsity Football, preparing for upcoming season

It’s a beautiful, sunny Tuesday in July, but rather than spending the day at the beach, the San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Football players are lifting weights in the high school gym. It is all part of their training regime. The student athletes are preparing to improve on their 5-5 finish from last season. And while the players have been working hard all summer, the preparation for a successful season goes beyond the weight room. 

County offers limited amnesty for unpermitted dwellings, if certified as safe

The County Planning Department knows there are hundreds of unpermitted dwellings throughout the unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz County, especially up and down the San Lorenzo Valley. Aimed at insuring a basic level of health and fire safety in these living spaces, the county has rolled out a new “Limited Immunity Amnesty Program,” called the Safe Structures Program, to improve the safety of both residents and neighbors of these “not-entirely-legal” residential spaces, while trying to avoid the dreaded “Red Tag” that puts people out of much needed affordable housing.

Home prices ‘inflated’ by tech giants

High-paying Silicon Valley employers like Google and Apple helped drive home prices up 16.9 percent in commuter-friendly Scotts Valley over the last 12 months, but new local and federal laws may cool that red-hot pace.

SLVWD urged to agree with the Grand Jury

At a special meeting on June 27, the San Lorenzo Valley Water District (SLVWD) board of directors received public input on criticism received from the Santa Cruz County Civil Grand Jury about the SLVWD board’s communication practices with the public. This public discussion became somewhat acrimonious as it progressed, with a small group of citizens agreeing wholeheartedly with the findings and recommendations of the Grand Jury.

Private well owners reject any new metering fees

Private well owners made their interests clear at a “stakeholders” meeting for the Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency.  In a standing-room only meeting on May 31, nearly all of the 60 people at the meeting raised their hands when asked if they were representing private well owners.  

Students graduate from BCFD internship program

Some internships are more demanding than others – and more than one proud parent of a San Lorenzo Valley High School student graduating from the Boulder Creek Fire Department’s Internship Program said the program often sent their kid home exhausted.
