Teen killed on Highway 236

A 17-year-old girl from Boulder Creek was killed after her car ran off the road on Highway 236 Tuesday afternoon.
Kirsten Wetterhorn, a San Lorenzo Valley High School student, died after she lost control of the 1996 Toyota Camry she was driving at about 4:30 p.m. according to the California Highway Patrol. According to CHP, she swerved into the oncoming lane before swerving back across the road where she ran into a tree.
Authorities said it appeared that she was driving at least 60 miles per hour on the road. The speed limit on that section is 35 miles per hour.
There were no other passengers in the car and no one else was injured. The road was dry and clear at the time of the accident.
San Lorenzo Valley High School students mourned Wetterhorn’s death on Wednesday, April 13 at the school. To bring attention to April as Distracted Driving Month, CHP was scheduled to deliver an assembly titled IMPACT Teen Drivers at the school on Wednesday. Previously, the assembly was put on at Santa Cruz, Highlands and Harbor High School before it was to come to SLV. The assembly highlighted traffic collisions as the No. 1 cause killer of teenagers in America.
