This column is dedicated for all the soon-to-be-middle schoolers.
The summer flew by quickly, and we are all moving up a grade this year. When I entered Scotts Valley Middle School last year, I thought about changing classes, meeting new friends, and learning new things. I understand that some of you might be nervous or anxious, but I want to reassure you that there is nothing to stress about.
The school is larger than the elementary school, but it is easy to learn your way around fast. Your classes could end up close to each other or farther apart. Don’t worry about being late to class, because you have a three-minute passing time.
All of the teachers in both academies are wonderful! You might be disappointed if you and your friends are not in the same classes together, but you will still be able to see them around campus or at lunch, and you even have the chance to make new friends. Be open to meeting other people from different schools that will be attending school with you.
Join different clubs and meet people that have the same interests as you. It’s nice to meet new people, because you can include them with your usual group of friends.
This year, your schoolwork will get harder, and you will have several more projects. Sometimes, it can get overwhelming. If you get stressed, take a break for a couple of minutes and collect yourself and then try again. The deadlines for your homework and especially projects can either make or break your grade, so don’t miss them.
Now, don’t think middle school is all work; you get to have fun, too. We have amazing themed dances every few months and a lot of fun activities. The dances are a great time to hang out with your friends and get dressed up. Our activities include student council, sports and electives, like art, health and study skills.
See, middle school won’t be that scary. It’s just the beginning for you to learn and enjoy yourself in a new environment. I hope you have a great first year like I did! See you in school.
