Two young men accused of stealing guns from a Scotts Valley home in May have pleaded guilty to first-degree residential burglary and will be sentenced to up to 365 days in county jail.
Scotts Valley residents Ryan Estrada and David Johnson, both 18, will return to court Dec. 20 to be sentenced. Judge Paul Burdick ruled that the teens will not have to serve time in state prison.
The stolen guns, however, remain missing.
“We believe that they were sold within the first hour,” Scotts Valley police Sgt. Mike Dean said.
Police will continue to follow leads, but they have little information about who bought the firearms.
“Basically, none of these kids are talking about anything,” Dean said.
Police initially arrested a 17-year-old Scotts Valley student after the burglary of a home on Navigator Drive in Skypark.
Further investigations and the serving of search warrants led officers to Estrada and Johnston.
Officers learned that Estrada drove the 17-year old and Johnston to the Navigator Drive home to steal several guns. Johnston and the 17-year old ransacked the home, removed two gun cases and carried the stolen guns to Estrada’s waiting car, according to the district attorney’s office.
The stolen property included a metal gun case that held an AK-47 assault rifle, a .44 caliber Desert Eagle handgun and a .22 caliber Ruger handgun. A separate leather gun case that contained a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun and a Remington rifle with an attached scope were also taken from the home.
