Rock ’n’ roll, puppet people and Lady Gaga are rolled into one in this summer’s production by Little People’s Repertory Theater in Ben Lomond.
“Pinocchio: A Bohemian Rhapsody” is Executive Director Janinne Chadwick’s brainchild from seven years ago, updated for this summer to include contemporary characters that mimic the likes of Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga and Hannah Montana.
The rock musical blends 22 musical numbers with action to tell the story of Pinocchio.
“It really is my favorite show,” Chadwick said, noting the variety of characters and music.
The production, directed by Daria Troxell with musical direction by Arindam Krishna Das, blends traditional Italian Commedia Del Arte with a Las Vegas-style revue.
“It’s a really fun show,” said 14-year-old Ruby Silvera, who plays Momma Geppetto. “I have a lot of fun with my character. My character is totally wild, and that’s my personality.”
The set, designed by Scott Laird and Denise Gorham, is something to behold. Along with several whimsically painted backdrops, a giant whale floats down from above with the ability to swallow Pinocchio, who’s played by 11-year-old Travis Gorham.
Stage fright is something few of the actors, ages eight to 14, even think about.
“I’m not nervous (on stage),” Gorham said. “I’ve been in theater almost my whole life.”
Chadwick said that of the 71 kids taking part in this summer’s production, only 10 spaces had opened up from the previous year. All the other youngsters returned from last summer.
As the actors get older, they earn larger parts and lead roles.
Gavin James-Beckham, 13, will sing “Wish You Were Here,” and “Mambo Italiano.”
“Rehearsals have been pretty good,” said the LPRT veteran. “It seems like it’s coming together.”
Marley Morrison, who plays a harlequin, said hanging out with friends is one of the reasons the production is so much fun.
Fourteen-year-old Amanda Hoffstetter, who plays a blue muse, agreed.
“It’s such an amazing experience,” she said, noting that she’s become friends with Gorham, who plays Pinocchio, because their characters interact with each other so much.
The show opens Thursday, July 21, and runs until July 31, with shows every day except July 25 and 26.
“It’s not just a play,” said Sydney Villa, 12. “It’s about all of us coming together.”
