Beginning this weekend, Ben Lomond Transfer Station on Newell Creek Road and Buena Vista landfill in Watsonville will be closed Sundays.
The Sunday closure is a result of cost-cutting measures by the county of Santa Cruz.
The transfer station will now be open for garbage drop-off from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. CRV is handled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
To help out those who normally recycle at the transfer station on Sundays, the Valley Women’s Club has announced that it will reopen the SLV Redemption/Recycling Center in Boulder Creek, 15485 Bear Creek Road, on Sundays. The club also seeks an amendment to the Felton recycling center’s permit that would allow it to remain open until 5 p.m. Sundays.
Felton is open for CRV from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
The SLV Redemption/Recycling Center in Boulder Creek will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday starting July 3.
Operators handle everything by hand, so it is up to the discretion of each site’s operators whether a particular load of materials can be accepted there.
All recycling sites accept aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, tin (steel) cans, all plastic household containers Nos. 1 through 7, newspapers, cardboard and mixed papers, including junk mail and paperboard. Materials should be clean and dry, with lids removed from all bottles.
Ben Lomond accepts other recyclable materials, as well, mostly free of charge, including used motor oil and antifreeze, electronic equipment, computers, scrap metal and hard plastics. Large appliances require a $10 fee.
On Thursdays at the transfer station, the household hazardous waste receiving station is open, and residents may drop off fluorescent bulbs, old medicines, old gasoline, herbicides, pesticides and other harmful materials for no charge.
