A home shaped like a rocket ship and perched on top of a hill overlooking Scotts Valley is up for sale.
The house, located at 100 Blueberry Court in Scotts Valley, is off Whispering Pines Drive and overlooks the Mount Hermon Road and Scotts Valley Drive intersection. It has been a source of interest for residents since it was constructed in 1984.
Owner Edwin Ethrington died February 11 at 82 years old, and the trustee of the house put it up for sale.
“It’s been a mysterious house,” Logan said.
Ethrington, according to Logan, helped design the home himself and included many fantastical features. Architect Kenneth Rogers of Santa Cruz drew the plans.
“It’s the most unique house I’ve ever sold,” Logan said. “It has a touch of Disneyland, and a touch of storybook.”
Logan got to know Ethrington in a business relationship in the years before his death.
Ethrington liked to race motorcycles and used to drive down Scotts Valley Drive in a Rolls Royce wearing a cowboy hat.
The home has a 360 degree view of Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz, including a view of the Pacific Ocean. It’s listed for $1.5 million, and Logan said it probably needs $300,000 to $400,000 worth of work before it could be considered up to date.
Much of the home is completely unique. All the cabinets and doors are made of solid mahogany. And each door is 3 ½ inches thick, Logan said. He noted each sink has 3 ½ inch copper piping, twisted to add uniqueness. Giant boulders surround the swimming pool and the outside decks were built with massive wooden pieces and curved brick work along the indoor barbecue may have been designed by or is similar to designs by the famous architect Robert L. Byrd. Visitors cross a pond to enter the front door and a three car garage has no posts because of massive wooden girders that span its width. The 3,156 square foot, 3 bedroom, 3 ½ bath home sits on a 73,921 square foot lot.
“When I asked him why he built it that way, he said just said ‘I just wanted it this way,’” Logan said. “The design was in his head.”
“It’s truly a magical house,” Logan said. “If they put money into it, who knows what the price could be for the right buyer.”
