The nonprofit Valley Churches United Missions is collecting donations to help 59 adults and seven children displaced by the Aug. 18 fire at the Brookdale Inn and Spa.
Twenty-six households were evacuated when fire tore through the complex’s apartment wing, and at least 10 units were destroyed completely.
Furniture and clothing items may be taken to Mountain Thrift, 9477 Highway 9, in Ben Lomond, and checks earmarked for Brookdale Fire may be sent to VCUM, P.O. Box 367, Ben Lomond 95005.
All proceeds will help the fire victims, according to VCUM founder Annette Marcum.
Shumei celebrates with Open Farm Day
The Shumei Santa Cruz Farm will host its annual Open Farm Day beginning at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 30 in Bonny Doon.
There will be presentations on natural agriculture, a farm tour and performances by the Shumei Youth Taiko drummers to accompany a fresh lunch made from natural agricultural produce.
Children’s activities, such as origami and a magic show, will also take place at the farm at 6040 Bonny Doon Road.

Acupuncturist waives fees in wake of Lockheed Fire
Felton Community Acupuncture will waive its new-patient fee of $20 for firefighters and community members directly affected by the Lockheed Fire through Sept. 30. Current patients will also receive $10 off each treatment.
According to Felton Community Acupuncture, the procedure can help with a variety of aliments caused by fires, including headaches, itchy eyes, stress, anxiety and respiratory difficulties.
