Youngsters win Ben Lomond chili cook-off
The St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church youth group team — adviser Jessie Snyder-Landeros, Mario Landeros, adviser Deidre Guindon Kodner, Jaden Ruff and Bella Landeros — cooked the winning dish at the church’s annual Chili Cook-off on Sept. 19.
The team called its prize-winning vegetarian chili “Chill-able Chili.”
Sharon Fishel’s chili, “Pollo Loco,” was voted “Kids Favorite,” and rector Blaine Hammond’s chili was voted the “hottest” entry.
Police officer promoted to sergeant
Patrick Guire was promoted to sergeant at the San Jose Police Department on Aug. 20.
Guire, a 1989 San Lorenzo Valley High graduate, was a Cougar wrestling and football champion and attended University of California, Davis. He joined the Concord Police Department after college and later transferred to the San Jose Police Department, where he served as a detective and an officer before his recent promotion.
Students in running for national honor
Peter Horton of San Lorenzo Valley High School and Capella Yee and Maiya Moncino of Scotts Valley High School have been named semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship.
The local trio scored in the top 1 percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT as juniors last year. More than 16,000 students were named as semifinalists nationwide.
Semifinalists must submit an application, including an essay and information about their leadership and community activities, for consideration.
Scholarship winners will be announced between April and July.
Airman graduates military training
U.S. Air Force Airman Keith Rice has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Rice completed eight weeks of training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Rice is the son of Alexandra Petrini of Scotts Valley and Keith Rice Sr. of San Jose.
He graduated from Santa Clara High School in 2001 and received an associate degree from Heald College in San Jose in 2008.
