Valley native commissioned in Army
Sean Main recently graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
During the three-month training, Main received “basic soldiering” instruction in leadership, professional ethics, soldier team development, combined arms tactics, weapons defense, combat water survival, squad drill, intelligence, field training exercises, day and night land navigation, confidence obstacle course, common core tasks, communications, staff and general military subjects and physical fitness tests that included 3-, 4- and 5-mile runs and foot marches between 5 and 12 miles carrying rucksacks.
Main, a San Lorenzo Valley High alumnus and 2008 San Francisco State University graduate, is the son of Darlene D’Ambrosio of Felton.
Student in running for Coca-Cola scholarship
Nick Lipperd, a San Lorenzo Valley High School senior, has been named a semifinalist for the 2011 class of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.
Lipperd, who qualified as one of 2,100 semifinalists, is in the running for one of 50 $20,000 scholarships or 200 $10,000 scholarships. The winners will be announced in April.
BC woman awarded $3,000 grant
Boulder Creek’s Tamara Scott has been awarded $3,000 by Royal Neighbors of America as part of the organization’s Nation of Neighbors Program, to help her create media for nonprofit cable television broadcasts.
Scott has produced broadcasts, at her expense, on subjects including environmental dangers, healthy foods and the elimination of hunger. The money she received will help her continue the work.
